Panchamrit/Charanamrit Recipe for Prasad and festive rituals| How to make Panchamrit/Panchamrut
Panchamrit is a holy Ayurvedic drink/concoction of five ingredients which is served at temples and also made at home on holy occasions and festivals. No auspicious Hindu ceremony or ritual is complete without this holy mixture.
It has great significance for festivals like Janamashtami, Diwali, Shivaratri. One of the main Prasad offered during the Satyanarayana Pooja along with Sooji Ka Halwa or Atta Panjiri.
It can also be consumed during fasting days like Ekadasi fast.
What is Panchamrit/Panchamruta
Panch means ‘five’ and Amrit means ‘Immortal’, Nectar’ or ‘Drink of Gods’ in Sanskrit. Panchamrit is offered as prasad in temples and after rituals or pooja. As per the Hindu Mythology, it is also used for Abhisheka, traditional bath given to the idols of Gods and Goddesses in temples.
Health Benefits of Panchamrit
Not only it has it’s religious significance but it is also considered as health drink. Each element/ingredient of Panchamrit has it’s significance in Ayurveda. It is considered very good for overall health and boasts our immunity. Strengthens brain function, bones and muscles.
It should be consumed early in the morning in limited portions.
In North India, Panchamrit is also given to pregnant females, as it is considered very good for the health of mother and the foetus. I took panchamrut (after due consultation with my gynecologist) during both my pregnancies during my first trimester.
To make Panchamrit for expecting moms, take 1-2 tsp ghee, 1 tsp each of honey, sugar, curd and mix nicely with 5 tsp of milk. Best to have it during the first trimester. Please consult your doctor or elders in house before consuming it.
Ancient Hindu texts quote it as the Exlir of Life. Mahabharata mentions, it was one of the jewels churned out during the Sagar Manthan or Kasheera Manthan by demons and gods.
What is the difference between Panchamrit and Charanamrit

Charan means ‘Feet of Divine’ and Amirt is ‘Nectar’.
In many parts of India Panchamrit is also known as Charanamrit. At many places there is slight variation in ingredients also. In many regions in Charanamrit, dry fruits like Makhana(foxnuts) and some dry fruits(Almonds, Chironji and Dry Coconut pieces) are also added.
Ingredients to make Panchamrit/Charanamrit
Panchamrit consists of five basic elements which have their own ayurvedic and religious significance. These ingredients when mixed in right proportion enhance the properties of each other.
Apart form these 5 ingredients one can add additional ingredients to make it more nutritious and delicious.
Milk- It represents purity and piousness. It also has cooling effect on body and mind. Cow’s milk is basically used for preparing Panchamrit. Use boiled and pasteurized cold milk.
Curd- Represents prosperity and progeny. It is the only fermented food approved by Ayurveda as health friendly. Since it is a probiotic, improves digestion. Take freshly set sweet curd. Do not use sour curd.
Honey- It represents sweet speech and unity (as it is made by bees). It is also good for digestion, radiant skin. It has all essential amino acids, minerals and carbohydrates and essential fatty acids. use pure organic honey.
Sugar- Represents bliss and sweetness. Prefer using candy sugar/mishri as it is one of the purest raw form of sugar. Candy sugar also has cooling effect on body. You can also use jaggery powder or raw cane sugar.
Ghee- Clarified Indian Butter, represents victory and knowledge. Contrary to many people’s belief, Ghee is very health friendly ingredient when consumed in controlled amounts. It is a good source of Vit.A and Vit. E and has antioxidant properties. Use ghee made with cow’s milk.
Holi Basil/Tulsi is also one of the main ingredient. In olden/ancient times all the ingredients were homemade and pure. Due to current lifestyle and busy schedules for many it is not possible to get pure ingredients . It is believed that Tulsi plant is very auspicious, it’s leaves purify anything / food to which these are added.
Ganga Jal-Water of Holy Ganga/Ganges river is considered very auspicious by Hindus. It is also believed to purify anything to which it is added. Add it if you have else you can skip it.
Makhana/Foxnuts or Lotus Seeds, Almonds or Cashew Nuts, Chironji, Dry Coconut thinly sliced pieces.
How to make Panchamrut/Charanamrit
Panchamrit Kaise banaye
Simply mix all the ingredients nicely.
Coarsely crush dry if using in the recipe.
Crush Mishri/Candy sugar using a moartar and pestle.
Finish the concoction on the day itself by evening. Refrigerate the leftover and at the most finish it by next day.

- ½ Cup Milk
- ⅓ Cup Palin Yogurt/Curd
- 1 tbsp Honey
- 1-2 tbsp Raw Cane Sugar/Jaggery Powder or Candy Sugar(Mishri)
- 1 tbsp Ghee
- 4-5 Tulsi Leaves
- 2 tsp Ganga Jal optional
- 8-10 Phool Makhana/Fox nuts Lotus Seeds
- 4-5 Crushed Almonds or Cashew Nuts or both
- 1 tsp Chironji
- 1 tbsp Thinly sliced Dry Coconut or add grated Coconut
- pinch of cardamom powder
- In a mixing bowl add milk, curd/yogurt, sugar, honey, ghee and ganga jal.
- Mix nicely.
- If adding nuts then coarsely crush and add it to the mixture.
- Keep it in clean cool place or refrigerate it before serving or using it in pooja.
