Healthy Chocolate Almond Milkshake Recipe | Chocolate Almond Smoothie/Milkshake without any cream or ice cream

Creamy rich and so delicious Milkshake made without any cream or ice-cream. Vegan-friendly, Gluten-free

Chocolate Almond Milkshake

Healthy Chocolate Almond Milkshake is not only delicious and filling but you won't believe it is also packed with health friendly ingredients. It takes just 5 minutes to make it and enjoy this power packed milkshake.

It is not loaded with cream/ice cream or castor sugar. You can have it for on-the-go breakfast or a quick evening snack to curb the hunger pangs. Also, an excellent post workout snack.

Milkshakes are a favourite thing especially with kids during summers.Any why only kids, many of us, grown-ups too enjoy a chilled glass of summer cooler when tired and feeling low with summer heat. In India, you can see stalls and shops selling so many variations of milkshakes. These are not only filling but also.

Gluten-free and Vegan-friendly Chocolate Almond Milkshake is loaded with goodness of Almonds, Dates and Oats not only boasts up the energy levels when tired but also takes care of the nutrition to kick start your day. With oats and chocolate flavour, it tastes like a chocolate oats cookie shake, which kids will finish quickly without any fuss.

My kids love anything with chocolate especially my teenage daughter. Chocolate Milkshake is one of her favorite shakes. I do make it for my kids with ice-cream/whipped cream but not all the times. Since ice-creams are fat and sugar loaded, I always look up ideas of making their favorite desserts and sweet snacks with health friendly ingredients. One such recipe what i came across few years back was Oats and Almond Smoothie. That gave me an idea to try their favorite shakes and icecreams with oats.

Milkshakes vs Smoothies

Sometimes I do wonder what is a difference between a milkshake and a smoothie..

Many times both the words are used interchangeably, but for lot of people there is a difference between a smoothie and milkshake.

As per many online sources..

  • Milkshakes are made with milk in addition to fruits/fruit preserves or other ingredients like nuts, cocoa powder, chocolates, caramel sauce and ice creams. It is are mostly made with (dairy/plant) milk and creams and have creamy rich consistency.
  • Smoothies on the hand are mostly made with yogurt(popular choice) and have added fruits, veggies nuts. These have thick and smooth consistency and that's why the name smoothie. People do make smoothies with milk(plant/dairy), but again, that is of much thicker consistency. Smoothies can be replaced with mini meal and can be substituted for on-the-go-breakfast. Chia seeds and flax seeds can also be added to make it rich it rich and extra thick.

But again, there are upteem recipes on online where they add ice-cream to a smoothie. And many of us do not always add ice cream while making milkshakes.

I leave it on you to decide whether you call this Chocolate Almond Shake a smoothie or a shake but you and your kids are surely going to love this even without any cream or ice cream.

Ingredients to make Healthy Chocolate Almond Smoothie

Cocoa Powder- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder adds a chocolaty taste. If you are adding sweetened cocoa, then lower the amount of sweetner used in the recipe. You can also add any chocolate(melted) of your choice, if you run out of cocoa powder. When using milk chocolate adjust the amount of sweetener in the recipe.

Milk- It is the base for this shake. I have used dairy milk. You can use any plant based milk also like almond milk, soy or oats milk.

Oats- Quick Rolled Oats is the thickening agent here which make this milkshake rich and creamy. Use a high speed blender or soak oats in water for a couple of minutes so that it softens and gets well blended in milk mixture. Sometimes kids get fussy about little tid bits coming in their mouth and that spoils all the fun of having milk shake for them.

Dates- These are a source of natural sugar and fibres. Dates are very good especially for the kids. Use seedless dates in the recipe. If dates are too dry you can soak it in warm water for 5-10 mins before using in the recipe. I have used dates as sweetener here and not added any additional sugar. You can add more sugar/maple syrup or honey to adjust the taste as per your taste.

How to make Healthy Chocolate Almond Milkshake

The recipe is customizable. You can adjust the ingredients as per your preferences and no. of people you are making for.

It is a super easy, 1 step process to make this delectable milkshake. Add all the ingredients in your blender, and blend to a smooth mix.

Also, if the dates are a bit dry, you can soak it in warm water before blending in milk. let the dates cool down to normal temperature before adding in milk.

You can do it in 2 steps also. First blend cocoa powder, dates, oats, almonds to a smooth mix with little milk, then add rest of the milk and blend.

Substitutes that I can use in my Chocolate Almond Milkshake recipe

Also, you can add powdered oats if you keep it handy. Almond meal can be added in place almonds.

You can skip dates and add dates syrup, but dates add lot of fibre so I prefer to use it as whole.

Variations for this Healthy Chocolate Almond Milkshake

You can any fruits like Blueberry. Strawberry, Bananas, Peaches. Do not citrus fruits(like orange and lemon) as it not the right food combination.

You can always add a scoop of ice cream while blending or serving.

I personally do not like adding ice cubes while making shakes and smoothies, but if you are okay you can always blend 3-4 ice cubes together with milk and other ingredients.
