About the Recipe

The dish got its name as the cooked rice is richly flavoured with cumin seeds/jeera along with other spices, that are added while cooking rice.

Jeera rice or Zeera Rice, is specially prepared on special occasions and served as a side with rich gravies and dals.

Want a change from your regular rice?? Make this flavourful rice tempered with Cumin seeds and other spices.

It is also served in many Indian restaurants(in US) as a complimentary dish to curries and dals.

Cumin seeds and it's benefits

Jeera or Cumin seeds and other whole spices make a dish flavourful and also enhances digestion.

Cumin seeds are an important part of Indian cooking and are good for weight loss. These help to flush out toxins from the body and have stress busting properties. You can refer to any good Ayurvedic resource to know more about Jeera/Cumin.

Adding cumin seeds in hot oil releases oil, which makes the rice more fragrant. It adds warm earthy aroma and flavour. When we serve it with heavy curries, cumin also works on digestion other than making the food flavourful.

Zeera rice is commonly prepared in open pans and in pressure cooker. You can also make Jeera rice with leftover rice. (will cover another post for that).

This post covers the Pressure Cooker, Instant Pot method.

Tips to cook Perfect Restaurant Style Jeera Rice

Few pointers to keep in mind and you can make perfect Jeera rice just like the one served in restaurants, each grain well cooked and separate. No one likes mushy rice on their platter.

  • A good quality basmati rice is a must. On using other quality rice, can't comment on it as I have not used any other than basmati rice.
  • Wash rice 2-3 times and soak it for at least 30 minutes before preparing it. This washes away extra starch present in rice grains.
  • Water to rice ratio is very important. While cooking in pressure cooker or Instant pot, add 1 and 1/4 cup of water as to 1 Cup of Rice.
  • Use Desi Ghee. Though adding desi ghee is not compulsory but it enhances the flavour of basmati rice. Also, the grains cook well and do not stick to each other.
  • Do not over saute whole spices.
  • Stick to the cooking time as per the quality of the rice you use.

Serving Suggestions

Jeera rice is served with many Indian Curries both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

Very flavorful rice. I make this for my little one almost weekly once. Love how each grain is separate and appealing too. I should try to do a quick release after a minute. I tend to leave it for a few minutes.
