Roasted Chana Murmura is a healthy low fat snack that can be had to satisfy the hunger pangs in between the meals or with the evening tea. Murmura or Puffed Rice is popular in the Indian Subcontinent. It is consumed as breakfast cereal or is an important ingredient of the popular Indian street foods likes. Bhelpuri, Murmura Bhel, Jhalmuri etc.
What is Murmura
Puffed rice or murmura is very less calories low in fat and light on stomach. Though it is not a good source of protein or fibres. It can be eaten without any guilt by weight -watchers. It is gluten-free and suitable for vegans. During our summer vacations, I and my sister munched on this snack whenever we felt hungry during those long summer days. The crunchy Murmura along with the roasted chana was a full-filling snack for us. My parents often have this with their evening tea. Murmura is also known as Lai in many parts of North India. Apart from being eaten as savoury snack , it is also used for making ladoos or sweet balls or chikkis(brittles) with jaggery or sugar, that are consumed during festivals like Makar Sankranti and Diwali. What I need to make this healthy snack..
To make this snack we need murmura(rice puffs), chana(roasted chickpeas without skin), curry leaves and spices like(red chilli powder, turmeric and dry mango powder). Murmura are roasted in mustard oil along with the chana and spices, till crunchy , cooled and then stored in an air-tight container.

Elevenses is a short break taken at around 11 a.m. to consume a drink or snack. The name and details vary between countries. Mostly popular in UK where it is similar to High Tea tradition with muffins, cookies and scones being served in the menu along with tea or coffee. We all agree how hearty be our breakfast or lunch we all feel some kind of craving to eat something around 10 or 11 in the morning or around 4-5 in evening. These light and healthy snacks are so perfect for those hunger pangs. Some of the light and healthy snacks that I usually keep ready for me and pack in kids lunchbox for snacktime--dry fruit bars, ladoos(Besan Ke Ladoo, Mix Fruit Salads,Whole Wheat Ladoos with Edible Gum or Mixed Nuts or Healthy Muffins and Cookies-- Almond and Coconut Cookie) to name a few.This low calorie and low fat Murmura or Chivda or Makhana Namkeen are some of the other snacks that can be eaten for mid-morning or at evening with tea. Will be updating some more recipes for the same in coming days.
Let's see how I make this light snack.
- 2 Cups Murmura/Rice Puffs
- 1 Cup Chane/Roasted Chickpeas without skin
- 2 Tsp Mustard Oil/Any flavorless oil
- 1 Tsp Jeera/Cumin Seeds
- 4-5 Curry Leaves
- 1-2 Dry Red Chillies
- 1/4 Tsp Turmeric
- 1/2 Tsp Red Chilli Powder
- 1/2 Tsp Dry Mango Powder optional
- Salt(to taste)
- Heat oil in a non-stick or heavy bottomed pan , add curry leaves,cumin seeds, dry red chilies. Add roasted chana and saute for l4-5 minutes, till the chana turn dark brown in color. Take care not burn Chana.
- Add the spices and murmura and mix well. Saute for 2-3 minutes, check for the crunchiness of murmura. Roasting the murmura makes it more crispy and crunchy.
- Once done, transfer to another bowl or plate, let it cool and store in an air-tight container.
- You can add peanuts, cashews or almonds as per your choice.
- Roasted Chana/Chickpeas without skin are available in Indian grocery stores(outside India).
- Use any other oil instead of mustard oil.
- If using mustard oil, heat it till smoking point, let it cool a little add curry leaves and jeera prepare murmura.
Do make this light and hearty snack. This is so perfect to pack when travelling, add up some more nuts of your choice and can be served or packed to gift your friends and loved ones during festivals like Holi and Diwali.
