What is Pina Colada

About the Recipe

Pina Colada is a cocktail made with Pineapple, Rum, Cream of Coconut or Coconut Cream and Sugar if required. The drink is said to be invented in Puerto Rico. There it is so popular that July 10th is celebrated as the National Pina Colada Day!

Pina means Pineapple and Colada means Strained. Many people like to use canned pineapple juice to avoid the risk of tartness from fresh Pineapple. Make Colada only with sweet tasting pineapple or use pineapple juice.

Non-Alcoholic Pina Colada

Non-alcoholic version is made without any rum. Since, there is no alcohol it can be given to kids to and to those who avoid alcohol.

With canned pineapple use the drink with light but with fresh pineapple and ice cubes it will be slushy and thick.

My kids love Pineapple and various pineapple based dishes. Pina Colada is one of it. Since, it is made with fresh pineapple and coconut cream/milk and very little or no sugar I consider it as a Healthy Shake or Mocktail.

Is Virgin Pina Colada a Healthy drink

While the original Pina Colada with rum may not be a healthy option, but you make the non-alcoholic version or Virgin Pina Colada a healthy drink.

Apart from rum (not at all good option especially for kids), the original Pina Colada is made with with coconut cream or cream of coconut (contains added sugar syrup which can make your drink sweeter than expected).

The Virgin version with coconut milk is much lighter where you can adjust the sweetener as per your taste.

It can also be served to a wider range of guests. Perfect for parties or family gathering or with kids and young children.

Ingredients to make Non-Alcoholic Pina Colada

Fresh Pineapple- Use sweet juicy fresh Pineapple to make the mocktail. Frozen pineapple pieces along with ice cubes make it more ice cream like.

Coconut Milk- In original pina colada, Coconut Cream is used in the recipe. For the lighter version I have used Coconut Milk in the recipe. Since, I make it quite often so we prefer lighter version with coconut milk.

Sugar- Add sugar depending on the sweetness of pineapple. Sugar cuts down the tartness of Pineapple(if any). You can also add honey(makes it non-vegan) or maple syrup.

Apple Juice- This is totally optional and I like to add it to mocktail especially for my guests. Try it and you will know why I prefer to add a little bit apple juice in the recipe!

Maraschino Cherries and Pineapple wedges for garnish-I have used the local cherries that are available in plenty these days.

How to make Pina Colada

It takes just a couple of minutes to make this refreshing Vegan Mocktail at home.

Use both frozen Pineapple chunks and ice cubes in the recipe if you want a creamier and ice cream like consistency. If frozen pineapple is not there or you don't have time to for it then use the fresh pineapple slices with ice cubes.

  • First add frozen pineapple slices with sugar. Blend to smooth puree with no chunks left.
  • Add ice cubes, coconut milk, blend to a smooth mix.
  • Serve immediately topped with more Pineapple slices and cherries.

If you don't have cherries add fresh or dried strawberries, cranberries for the pop up of color.

Variations in Recipe

Add fresh Pineapple juice instead of fresh pieces.

For non-vegan version you can add a scoop of vanilla ice-cream while blending or serving, especially when making for kids party. They will really love this creamy Pina Colada.

Add frozen banana or avocado to make Pina Colada Smoothie.

Orange juice really takes the taste of Pina Colada to next level.

Freeze the mocktail in popsicles moulds to make Pina Colada Popsicles.

If you have an ice cream maker Pina Colada is another delicious treat that you can make with this non-boozy tropical drink.

Can we make Pina Colada ahead of serving time

When we blend pineapple chunks and coconut pieces, Pina Colada gets frothy . If we make it ahead and keep it till serving time (say 1-2 hrs) then the froth will settle down and the drink won't taste good. Also, the frozen pineapple and ice added to it will melt and make it watery. So it better to make it just before serving time.

If you plan to serve at your party, keep the ingredients handy and make it fresh when the guests arrive.

Why I feel tingling sensation or irritation in my mouth after having Pineapple

Please Note, many of us feel a tingling sensation or feeling of mouth cut after having pineapple. It is due to the enzyme Bromelain which is known to act on the protein of mouth, lips and gum. It breaks down protein into smaller parts. So, if you eat pineapple and get this feeling then before using raw pineapple in recipes or eating it, discard the center part. This will stop the sensation or irritation in your mouth and lips part.

Yummmm! There are so many happy memories attached to this refreshing drink. I love that you make yours with coconut cream for a silkier texture. And also love all the variations, especially with frozen bananas.
