Looking for something cool and refreshing for a hot summer day.. Try this Agua Fresca ...Watermelon Mint Cooler with the goodness of juicy watermelon and refreshing mint.
Last week said bye-bye to winters and now finally Spring colors started showing up, suddenly temperature is rising and feels like already summers have set in. Two days it was so hot and today Weather God again took a U-turn, it rained this morning with thunder and lightning!!! All around the world, everyone is talking about weird weather changes. Folks from India told us about the soaring temperatures and there it feels like already Jun in Mid April. But aren't these climatic changes man-made? We humans only are responsible for the so-called weird weather. There's still time to remind ourselves to behave unless it gets out of control and the coming generations will have to pay for it. To keep the summer heat away, one of the best things is to have lot n lots of water, keep yourself hydrated. During the summer months most of the time I feel like surviving on fruits and water only. Eating fruits all the time can become monotonous and at time kids just don't like biting into the fruit so many times I make fruit juices, a glass of chilled fruit juice cools you down and fills you without feeling heavy on the stomach.
During summers I always make one or the other fruit-based drinks using mangoes, lemons(Shikanji/ Indian Lemonade), melons or yogurt based drinks like Chass(Indian Buttermilk), Ginger Peach Iced Tea and give to kids when they come back from school.
What are Agua Frescas..
A few years back when I was looking some summer drinks or mocktail recipes using fresh fruits, I came across Mexican Coolers or Agua Frescas. These are known also known as 'fresh waters' or 'cool waters' quite popular in Mexico and US and are quite similar to what we make in India we don't add water and they don't add Black Salt which is quite commonly used in Indian Summer Drinks. All you have to do is take any summer fruit of your choice.. watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, blend with water, add sugar or any sweeteners as per your taste, a dash of lime/lemon juice.
I almost forgot about the name Agua Frescas until this weekend when I went to Whole Foods Market. There they were serving small samples of it, kids too loved it and asked me if I can make it for them when they come back from school. I have given Indian touch to this Mexican cooler by adding black salt and roasted cumin powder.
