About Dhania Panjiri and Janamashtami

Dhania Panjiri or Dhaniya Panjiri is made on the occasion of the auspicious hindu Festival Janmashtami. It is one of the biggest festival in India which marks the birth of Bhagwan Krishna!! All over India it is celebrated in different ways.

In North India people fast of this day and at midnight which id the time of Krishna's birth end their fast by consuming food. Many other east Sattvic food on this day which includes food made without any grains or cereals, onion garlic and heavy spices. Many simple and delicious dishes are prepared to offer as prasad to the Divine.

Dhania Panjiri is one of the main prasad items. Dhania is Coriander and Panjiri is a wholesome mix made with nuts, dried fruits, whole wheat flour and ghee.

Since many people avoid Whole Wheat Flour on this day or while fasting, Dhania or Coriander is added to give texture to the Panjiri. The dish is not only loaded with health friendly ingredients but also tastes so delicious.

As kids we always waited for festivals and especially Janamashtami where we were treated with delicious Prasad and food specialities.

Some of the Janamashtami specialities from the blog which you can make if not able to decide what to make for prasad or bhog.

Ingredients to make Dhaniya Panjiri

Dhaniya/Coriander Seeds- Freshly roasted coriander seeds are grinded to fine powder and then used in the recipe. You can also use store bought coriander powder, but I prefer and suggest to use seeds. Also, do not forget to roast the seeds else the taste of panjiri won't be that good.

Mixed Nuts- Use a combination of nuts and dried fruits of your choice. I have used almonds, cashew nuts, melon seeds and grated dried coconut. Roast all the nuts and then coarsely grind it. Do not choose old nuts, as long kept nuts may taste rancid and the taste will not be good. You can also add walnuts, pine nuts pistachios.

Ghee- A must use in the recipe as we are making it for bhog and also it lends the flavour and taste to panjiri. Vegans can use coconut oil.

Sweetener- In traditional recipes boora(a local type of powdered sugar) is used. I have used jaggery powder. You can also use powdered castor sugar.

You can also add 1-2 green cardamom for flavour.
