Is there any difference between Banana Chips/Plantain Chips

South Indian Style Banana Chips/Plantain are one of the most famous and popular snack in India. Those are made with special type of Banana (Nendran Banana). It is a different variety of Banana which is large in size than the banana. It is also not Plantain which belong to banana family but are different from bananas.

Plantains are larger in size than bananas. They have different texture and taste ad have thicker skin.

The traditional way of making Raw Banana Chips/Plantain Chips is deep frying in Coconut Oil, which lends a unique nutty taste to the chips. Plantains are lower in sugar and are less starchier than bananas.

Turmeric- gives a yellow hue to the chips

Salt as per taste and Oil.

I also added some red chilli powder to add a bit of hotness to these crispy chips.

Other Seasoning Suggestions for Air Fryer Banana Chips

Black Pepper, Indian Chaat Masala, Peri Peri.

Add the seasoning along with oil and mix nicely so that all the banana slices are nicely coated.

How to make Air Fryer Banana Chips

To make crispy and crunchy chips, choose bright green raw bananas.

  • Peel it and then dip bananas in enough water. Add turmeric and salt to water. Keep bananas in water for about 10 mins. Soaking helps to avoid the blacking of peeled bananas and also adds to the crispiness in cooked chips.
  • Take out from water and pat dry on a kitchen towel or paper tissues.
  • Pre-heat the air fryer for 5 mins at 180 C or 350 F.
  • Using a mandoline or sharp knife, thinly slice the bananas. I also use my food processor to get very thin chips. Do not slice all the bananas at one go. Do as much as it fits in a single layer in your air fryer basket.
  • Add oil, salt, red chilli powder(if adding) and pinch of turmeric powder.
  • Coat all the slices nicely.
  • Line the slices a single layer in air fryer basket. Be careful it will be a bit hot.
  • Cooking time depends on the thickness of slices. Do not cut very thick slices as it will take more time to air fry. Also avoid cutting uneven slices as as some chips will be cooked more and some may get overcooked.
