Sweet and Tangy Cape Gooseberries Relish | Khatti Meethi Rasbhari Chutney Recipe | How to make Rasbhari ki Chutney

Cape Gooseberries Chutney

Sweet and Sour Tangy Chutney made with Cape Gooseberries or Rasbhari. Cape Gooseberry Relish is a flavorful dip in Indian Flavors, that you can enjoy not only with Indian meals, but also with chips and other appetizers and snacks.

What are Cape Gooseberries/Rasbhari

Cape Gooseberries are also famously known as Golden Berries/ Physalis/Inca Berries or simply Gooseberries. These berries  have a light paper cover, which seems like a berry wearing a cape. These are native to South American countries - Peru and Colombia and also grown in parts of Africa In India this is a seasonal fruit and is popular in Northern Sates known as Rasbhari.

Rasbhari/Cape Gooseberries look like small golden Tomatillos and are the size of cherry tomatoes. These are best enjoyed as fruit on it's own but you can make preserves like Jam, Squash. Use it in baking(tarts) , add in salads or make salsa to enjoy with nachos. Blend a few sweet berries in your ice-creams, it tastes amazing

Benefits of Golden Berries

It is also a very healthy and nutritious fruit. Rich in antioxidants, carotenoids and have anti inflammatory properties. These berries are rich in Vit. C much more than in lemons which is good for skin and hair. It also helps in improving eyesight. It is highly rich in calcium and phosphorous so good for bone health. Fiber rich berries also have high fructose content which makes beneficial for diabetic people. (Source: Various health sites.. please consult your doctor or nutrionist before having it).

My maternal grandmom loved this fruit and she always told us that it is good for eyesight, skin and hair. I like to have it just like that but also make chutney or jam that I can use it later. Recently, I also tried Golden Berries Salsa, that we enjoyed with nachos and pita chips. I will soon update the recipe for Cape Gooseberries Salsa.

Chutneys of India

One of the best part about Indian Cuisine is the different chutneys that we make. We have uncountable chutney recipes. Every state, every region has it's own variations of the same chutneys.. We can make chutneys with almost any fruit or veggie. These are the best accomplishments with our Indian breads and can perk a simple plain paratha/ dal rice or khichdi. There are sweet, tangy, sour, bitter, and medley of flavors in chutneys. Dry chutneys or wet chutneys, we have one for every occasion and meal type. Chutneys are not only a great meal accompaniment but also an integral past of Chaats/Indian street food/snacks. Chaats are incomplete without chutneys. We can also use chutneys as spread on sandwiches, chapati rolls or as a dip with chips, pita and nachos.

Ingredients required to make Rasbhari Ki Chutney/Cape of Gooseberries Chutney

Steps to make Cape Gooseberries Relish /Inca Berries Chutney

It is a no fuss recipe and is ready within minutes. The only time it takes is to clean the cape from the berries.

It is also an adaptable recipe, you can adjust spices as per your taste preferences.

Chop washed and clean berries , chop roughly.

Heat oil in pan/kadhai, add spices and then berry pieces and cook till berries are for and mushy. We do not add much water here as berries leave water while cooking.

Cool and store in an air- tight glass container/bottle. Stays good for about 2-3 weeks.

Tasted excellent. I only had 15 goldenberries so I added a small tomato, but followed the rest of the recipe. Sweet and sour flavor went very well with idlis.

"Heat oil... Add bay leaves and cloves. Add cumin seeds once it crackles, add grated ginger..."

Do you mean once the cumin seeds crackle, then I add the ginger, or do you mean that I add the cumin seeds once the bay leaves and cloves crackle?

Also, you say to mix well, then add 1/4 C if required. Do you mean add 1/4 C extra berries , or 1/4C water?

    Thank you!

I’m excited to make this recipe since I’ve grown 100s of cape gooseberries- which is very easy in a temperate climate, by the way. I don’t see where to use the cloves and bay leaves- when do I add them in? TIA

Wow! what an interestingly delicious chutney. We often get these cape gooseberries but since they are not appreciated I stopped buying them. I love this chutney and will definitely make it when I next go to the market. Sounds yum.

I had the opportunity to taste rasbhari a few years ago, when hubby got them home from a work trip in Delhi. Loved how juicy, sweet and tangy they were, so I can imagine just how flavourful this chutney would be.

The whole spices you have used here must have made it all the more special. ??

Sorry but have to say OMG! No wonder we couldn't guess the ingredient as I would never have thought of using gooseberries for a chutney. Whenever I get gooseberries, I eat them on their own or use for a dessert. What a wonderful Cape Gooseberry Relish Swaty. Definitely must try out this chatpata chutney.
