Indian Kachumber, one of the most popular and basic salad recipe from Indian Cuisine. It is a low calorie, zero oil salad and goes with almost all the meals.

Learn how to make basic Kachumber Salad with fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, onions in basic lemon and chaat masala dressing.

About the recipe

Kachumber Salad is basic Indian salad made with fresh onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and fresh cilantro/coriander leaves. It is an everyday oil-free salad that is served in almost all the Indian households with meals. Each having their own variations, some like it grated some like it cubed and some finely chopped.

This salad has the most basic dressing of lemon juice with Indian spice mix Chaat masala and salt.I also like to add some roasted cumin powder and mint leaves(if available) for extra refreshing taste. If you like to add some heat in your salad you can also add some finely chopped green chillies or any kind peppers to it.

Nutrient Value of Ingredients of Kachumber Salad

Bowl of Kachumber is loaded with antioxidants, minerals and vitamins especially Vit C, which is very essential for iron absorption.

Cucumbers keep the body cool as these are 90% water, rich source of Vit K and potassium which keeps the body hydrated.

Tomatoes are loaded with vit. C , lycopenes and antioxidants and rich in fibers .

Onions have immunity boosters, good for bone health, rich source of potassium which is many people are lacking.

Herbs like coriander/fresh cilantro and mint used in the salad also aids in digestion and adds a refreshing flavour to the salad.

Ingredients of Kachumber Salad

Basic Ingredients of Kachumber Salad are Fresh Cucumbers, Onions, Tomatoes with finely chopped fresh cilantro or coriander leaves(optional). In a way it is so much similar to Mexican Pico -di Gallo.

Dressing for Kachumber

Freshly squeezed lemon juice with dash of Chaat Masala, freshly ground black pepper (Kali Mirch) and Black Salt(Kala Namak) is the basic dressing for this salad. Many like to add vinegar also instead of lemon.

Ingredients for Kachumber salad

How to make Kachumber Salad

Simply chop finely all the vegetables. Also, finely chop cilantro or fresh coriander leaves. Try some mint leaves in salad for a refreshing taste, you will surely like it.

Take in a bowl and mix.

Make dressing . Mix together all the spices with lemon juice in a separate bowl. You can also add red chilli powder/chilli flakes for a spicy kick.

Add salt just before serving, as veggies leave water and salad may become too watery.

So make this crunchy Indian Kachumber Salad and serve it the way you like it with any of your dishes. It is also a great accompaniment with any kind of non-vegetarian food especially chicken dishes.

Variations for Indian Kachumber Salad

I like to add finely chopped beetroots or radish to it too as these are good source of iron which is very important to be included in diet.

Sometimes I also add cubed kiwi(fruit)/ripe or raw mango to it, as kids love it in with their food.

Can I make Kachumber Salad ahead

You can make Indian Kachumber ahead of lunch time or parties. Simply chop all the veggies and refrigerate keep. Mix and add dressing 30 mins before serving. Refrigerate the salad at least for 30 mins before serving.

Storing the leftovers

Refrigerate the leftovers and finish it by next day.

Also I do not recommend freezing this salad.

Serving Suggestions

Jazz up your rolls and wraps or roasted pappadums for masala papads with this simple salad. Add a bowl of boiled chickpeas(Kabuli Chane/Chole) or black chickpeas(Kale chane) for a tangy chana chaat. Simply add it in a bowl of beaten yogurt seasoned with chaat masala and roasted cumin powder and some chilli for heat, chilled raita is ready to relish with any Pulao or Biryani. There are so many options to play around and enjoy this salad.

This is my everyday salad that I prepare quite often for lunch, which is basic Indian meal at home of Dal(any lentil) ,Roti(Chapati) or Rice , dry subzi(optional), buttermilk or any yogurt preparation and bowl of salad.

Kachumbar is best enjoyed with an Indian meal. I remember we use to make this kind salad minus the beetroot everyday when I was young as its my dad's favorite. Your salad bowl is a roti of colors.
