Homemade Bread crumbs Recipe | Learn how to make Bread Crumbs at home(Air Fryer, Toasted Or Oven)

Bread Crumbs may seem to be a very simple and basic ingredient in your pantry but it comes so much handy while making lot of snacks, desserts and baked items. It is one of the important ingredient for binding the snacks and to make crispiest of some of the fried snacks.

Making homemade bread crumbs is also one of the best ways to use the leftover bread loaf or 2-3 day old bread(which has gone dry). And even the sides of the bread which many of discard while making toasts or sandwiches can be used to make it.

And why only the stale bread, you can make crumbs for breading cutlets, meat or patties from leftover corn flakes, chips or nachos, noodles or vermicelli.

What kind of bread to use to make Crumbs

You can use any type plain bread to make crumbs. White bread or Milk Bread, Sourdough or even the leftover burger buns or dinner rolls.

It is better to use 2-3 days old as it more dry then the fresh bread and has less moisture.

How to make Bread Crumbs without Oven

If you do not have oven or air fryer you can still make breadcrumbs easily. Cut the bread into cubes or tear it. Spread it on a baking tray or a plate. Keep it for few hrs till it is dry. Pulse in the food processor.

Bread crumbs in a toaster or in a pan on stove top

Toast bread in toaster on low mode. Tear it and the pulse into fine crumbs in food processor.

Or alternatively, you can tear bread or cut into cubes and toast in a pan till it starts getting light brown. Pulse in food processor to fine crumbs.

How to make Breadcrumbs in Air Fryer

Cut bread crumbs in small cubes or tear it roughly. Transfer to the air fryer. Air fry for 10-12 mins at 180C or 350F.

Preheat the Air fryer if you have option in it. Or, Air Fry for 5 mins.

BreadCrumbs in Oven

Cut the bread in cubes or tear it roughly . Spread it on a baking tray. Bake in a preheated oven for 7-8 mins at 180C or 350F.

Storage and Shelf life

Refrigerate the breadcrumbs in an airtight container. Stays good for about 1 month. You can also store it in freezer. Stays good for about six months Keep away from the moisture, which can lead to mold formation on the crumbs.

How to use the breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are used in making cutlets/croquettes or patties to bind the ingredients and breading for crunchy texture. It is also used for breading chicken and fish pieces for crunchy texture. Add crunch to your baked pasta, top with bread crumbs and cheese.

You can also it to thicken curries if you run short of cornflour.

Substitutes for Bread to make Breadcrumbs

Use noodles/vermicelli or unsweetened corn flakes .

Pulse very finely in a food processor.

Toast if required.

How to make Bread Crumbs(Air Fryer, Oven and without Oven)

  • Air Fryer/Oven/Gas stove

Ingredients
  

  • 4-5 Bread slices

Instructions
 

  • Cut bread slices in cubes or roughly tear it.
    4-5 Bread slices

To make dry breadcrumbs in Air Fryer

  • Line air fryer basket with a parchment paper or take bread slices in an air fryer friendly container(like a cake tin).
  • Let it cool completely and then pulse in food processor or crush the toasted bread with a rolling pin finely.
  • Air fry the bread cubes for 5 mins. at 180°C or 350°.

To make breadcrumbs in Oven

  • Preheat oven at 180°C or 350°.
  • Bake the slices for about 5-10 mins or till it becomes light brown.
  • Let it cool completely and then pulse in food processor or crush the toasted bread with a rolling pin finely.

To make Breadcrumbs without oven or air fryer

  • Toast the slices to light brown in a toaster. Completely cool it and then tear roughly into pieces. Pulse in a food processor to fine crumbs.
  • Or, Tear the pieces in and dry roast in apan.
  • Let it cool completely and then pulse in food processor or crush the toasted bread with a rolling pin finely.

Making crumbs without food processor

  • Transfer the cool and roasted bread pieces in a ziplock or between a parchment paper. Crush with a rolling pin.

Making Fresh crumbs

  • Take bread slices and tear it roughly and pulse in the food processor to fine crumbs. Use as required.

Storing and Shelf Life

  • Refrigerate or freeze in an airtight container.
  • Stays good about 1 month when refrigerated and about 6 months in freezer.
  • Use as required in recipes.

Making breadcrumbs with bread substitutes like cornflakes /noodles /vermicelli

  • Simply crush the cornflakes/noodles/vermicelli in a food processor.
  • Pulse to fine crumbs.
