Puliyogare..South Indian Tamarind Rice is also known as Puliogare or Puliyodharai in different states.
It is also known as Temple Rice, as it is distributed as Prasad
About the Recipe
Tamarind rice from the Iyengar community from South India is very famous. It is prepared on special and festive occasions to offer to God as Prasad.
Being a North Indian, I had very limited knowledge of South Indian Cuisine. Living in different parts of India especially in Mumbai, I interacted with the people from different states and cultures. Interacting with people and reading a lot about various cultures, I have learned a lot about South Indian, Maharashtrian, Gujarati Cuisine and many other cuisines.
I had shared in my blog that how I was introduced to Sambhar Sadam and Tamarind rice along with other South Indian Rice preparations by our Tamalian neighbor. I and my daughter love the spicy, sweet and tangy Tamarind Rice. We also used to go to a Balaji Temple near our place, there in prasad Tamarind or Lemon Rice was distributed. My daughter liked the tamarind rice so much that used to request the person distributing prasad to give her a second bowl!!
How to prepare Puliyogare
To prepare Puliyogare or Tamarind Rice in traditional way(from scratch), we need puliogare powder(which is made with grinding different spices).
Coriander seeds, sesame seeds, red chillies, mustard and methi seeds are used to make the powder. .Puliogare powder is added to rice along with tamarind paste known as puliyogare gooju. Our neighbour aunty, who gave me the recipe to make quick Sambar rice also gave the recipe for Tamarind rice. She also told me a quick way to make Tamarind Rice, using readymade Puliyogare Powder. I keep this Puliogare powder handy and use it to make this spicy rice for my daughter's lunch box or for a quick dinner option from leftover rice.

Love this instant version of puliodharai. We usually make the pulaikachal which takes time. But this recipe is wonderful for packing in lunch boxes.

Puliodarai is part and parcel of my kitchen and I make it often for lunch. This instant version comes in handy when you don't have time for the gojju.

I always keep a MTR brand puliyogare powder packet handy for quick fix lunches and instant version too makes a decent puliyogare.
