About the Recipe

Sorghum/Jowar is a gluten-free flour and is very nutritious. It is a safe and healthy alternative to Whole Wheat Flour especially for those with Gluten allergies. Also, an healthy alternative to all purpose flour/maida for those who want to avoid maida in their diet.

Millets have been a part of our food since ancient times but somehow in between these took a backseat. But, now millets have made a comeback and are used not only in cooking but also in baking. You can make breads, cookies and cakes using millets flour and serve to your family.

You are going to love this healthy Jowar Cookie recipe. My kids also love these and when I first made these they were not able to guess it is not made with wheat flour or the regular flour that I use in my baking.

  • These cookies are easy to make. Simple recipe with all the ingredients available in your pantry.
  • Made with healthy jowar flour which has numerous health benefits.
  • Good for those who cannot have cookies made with whole wheat flour.
  • These Cookies are chewy, buttery and loaded with coconut, cashew nuts and chocolate chips.
  • You can skip any of the above ingredients or substitute it with other nuts and dried fruits like cranberries/blueberries and raisins.
  • You can freeze the dough and make fresh cookies anytime of the day.
  • Perfect both for kids and adults.

Ingredients to make Sorghum Cookies/Jowar Cookies

Jowar Flour- Use fresh jowar flour. Do not use old flour as it develops a rancid taste.

Butter- for that buttery cookie flavour I use butter and kids love it. You can use substitute butter with oil in the recipe but cookies will have a different texture. They will not rise much and will kind of flat cookies.

Sweetener- I have used raw sugar (khand) available in Indian markets. You can use raw cane sugar or even castor sugar. Fine powdered jaggery or brown sugar can also be used in the recipe. It make cookies more chewy.

Others- Desiccated Coconut, Cashew nuts, Choco chips, Vanilla Essence, Baking Powder (as leavening agent).

Add salt when using salted butter.

You can add all three together (coconut, cashew nuts or choco chips) or substitute any with the other ingredients.

Instead of cashew nuts you can add chopped almonds, hazelnuts or pistachios.

How long the cookies stay good

Though the cookies won't last beyond 2-3 days. but, these stay good for about a week when stored properly.

Yes you can use. You may need to add a bit of more liquid as ragi flour may need more moisture for binding.Thank you for stopping by.
