Murmura Ladoos, the sweet balls made of puffed rice and jaggery are popular in Northern Part of India, especially Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and UP during winter months, especially around Lohri and Makar Sankranti festival. Lohri and Makar Sankranti are the winter harvest festivals in India, Lohri is celebrated in Northern parts of India on 13th Jan by Sikhs and Hindus, a day before Makar Sankranti, which is celebrated all over India on 14th Jan. Lohri is festival is dedicated to Fire and Sun God. In Punjab, people in evening gather together, lit bonfire, sing folk songs, dance together. Til/Sesame, Gur/Jaggery, Peanuts and popcorn and grains are offered to God and eaten in the form of sweets like Gajak, Chikkis(Brittles), Ladoos (sweet balls) and other special festive preparations. Sarson ka Saag with Makki Ki Roti and Chilka Urad dal Khichdi and Gajar Ka Halwa are also prepared.
To more about Makar Sankranti check my post.. Til and Khus Khus Chikki with Coconut Sugar.
In Gujarat, the festival is known as Uttrayan, Sankrat in Rajasthan, Pongal in Southern Indian states and Bihu in Northeastern states. These festivals mark the auspicious shift of Sun marking as one of the most auspicious festivals for Hindus.
Murmura Ladoos are winter and Lohri special. I remember mom making these crunchy ladoos sometimes during winters. Also, murmura chikkis(brittle) made with murmura/Rice Krispies(Indian form) and peanuts are sold in shops or on the roadside carts, and these also form one form of the economic winter snack for those who can't afford costly nuts like almonds, cashews. I remember as school kids we used to buy these ladoos/chikkis from the cart vendors who used to sell these outside our school. Since these are made of jaggery these are a winter special, as jaggery preparations keep the body warm and helps in digestion. On Lohri, people distribute these ladoos to each other along with peanuts and popcorns. Years back, during our stay in Chandigarh, we used to celebrate Lohri with our neighbors. Gathering together, celebrations in the chilly winters, around the bonfire, were fun with friends and family.
These ladoos are made with just 3 ingredients are ready in less then 15 minutes. The ladoos are crunchy and mildly sweet, I also add some crushed fennel seeds to it as it adds a nice taste to these crunchy treats.
Let's see how I make these delicious crunchy treats!!
Murmura Ladoos
Ingredients
- 2 Cups Murmura/Rice Puffs
- 3/4 Cups Gur/Jaggery
- 1/2 tsp Fennel Seeds
- 1 tsp Desi Ghee/Indian Clarified Butter
Instructions
- Dry roast murmura in a non-stick pan, till it starts giving aroma and turning light brown. Immediately transfer it to another dish or plate.
- In a pan, add ghee jaggery/gur, add 1-11/2 tbsp of water, keep stirring till jaggery melts.
- Add murmura and mix nicely.
- Transfer to a dish or plate, let it cook a little, lightly wet your hands and quickly make ladoos/tennis sized balls. You can also, transfer it to a square or rectangular dish set it and cut into pieces.
- Leave it in open for around an hour then store in an air-tight container. These stay good for around 3-4 months but trust me these disappear within few days unless you make a big batch of it.
It's the perfect time, make and share these sweets treats with your loved ones and enjoy the celebrations.
Lit a bonfire, pout some music, dance along and enjoy the Lohri treats like popcorn, peanuts, chikkis and ladoos.
