Brussels Sprouts Benefits
I was introduced to this vegetable when we moved to US in 2016. In India few years back it was not available in the local vegetable markets. But, now it is available in various super markets and online stores. When I an writing this post, I am in India and spotted these at a specialty super store which keeps vegetables and fruits that are not available in local markets.
Brussels Sprouts belongs to the family (Brassicaceae) of Cabbage, Kale, Mustard Greens and resemble mini cabbage.
These are low in calories but high in nutrients especially Vit. K and C. These are also known as immunity boasting Superfood as these are loaded with antioxidants.
Ways to Cook Brussels Sprouts
These are sautéed, boiled and roasted and served as a side dish with pastas, soups, in salads or simply as snack. My favorite way of having these is roasting in oven.
My family is a not a fan of this vegetable, but I like to have roasted sprouts even in simple black pepper and salt seasoning. So I make a small batch only for me. And now with the convenience of Air Fryer, I don't not switch on the oven every time, I need to make small batch for myself.

Ingredients to make Sweet and Spicy Brussels Sprouts
Apart from The Brussels Sprouts which is the main ingredient we need only a handful of basic pantry ingredients to make it.
Brussels Sprouts- Choose small ones with bright green heads with tightly packed leaves. outer skin. If the edges of the outer skin/leaves is or has yellow, brown spots which indicates aging and black spots which indicate the presence of fungus. The small heads are sweeter in taste and more tender than the bigger ones.
Soy Sauce-Take dark Soy Sauce or for gluten-free version take Tamari Sauce.
Chilli Garlic Sauce or Siracha- Lend the spicy garlicky kick to the veggie.
Sweetener-It balances the spicy taste and also aids in the caramelization of the roasted veggie. I added raw can sugar, you can add maple syrup(vegans) or honey(non vegan version).
Garlic Powder- It is optional, lends extra garlic taste to the dish. I tried it with fresh garlic also, but for the recipe here garlic powder works well as it gets mixed in the sauce and also you don't get bits of (for those who don't like). If you want to add fresh garlic then mince it well or make a smooth paste and then mix well the sauces.
Oil- Use Olive oil or any other good plant based oil . Avocado, Rice bran, Canola works fine for the recipe.
How to make Sweet and Spicy Brussels Sprouts
- Wash and clean the Brussels sprouts very nicely.
- Pat dry brussels sprouts on paper tissue/towel.
- Cut the hard ends of the sprouts and clean away any yellow leaves or dark spots.
- Cut into halves.
- Make sauce. Mix soy sauce, sweetener, oil and garlic powder if using.
- You can also add little salt, if required.
- Preheat the air fryer and then line the marinated sprouts in the air fryer basket.
- Cook for 12-15 mins .tossing in between.
- Serve hot.
Tips to get perfect Roasted Brussels Sprouts in Air Fryer
- Choose small but not very small pieces, as it cooks very quickly in air fryer and small pieces may burn.
- Cut the heads in half. Try to keep the size same for even cooking. If there are big pieces then cut in quarters.
- Layer the marinated sprouts in a single layer. Do not overload the basket.
- Line the basket with parchment paper, to avoid the sauces dripping in the basket base.
- Shake the basket in between for even roasting.
Storage and Shelf life of cooked Brussels Sprouts
Air Fryer Roasted Sweet and Spicy Brussels Sprouts stay good for 2-3 days when refrigerated in an air tight container.
I never freeze these so can't comment on it.
To reheat Brussels Sprouts in Air Fryer- Set the temperature to 150C/300F and reheat for 7-8 mins. On a higher temp. these may burn and become very dry.
To reheat Brussels Sprouts in Oven- Reheat on preheating mode at 300 F for 10 mins.
I do not recommend heating the Sprouts in microwave, as these become soggy and lose the crunch.

Air Fryer Sweet and Spicy Brussels Sprouts
Equipment
- Air Fryer
Ingredients
- 150 gm Brussels Sprouts see notes
- 1 tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 tbsp Siracha/Chilli Garlic Sauce
- 1 tbsp Sugar or any other sweetener as required
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil or any plant based oil
- Salt as required
Instructions
- Wash nicely and pat dry the brussels sprouts heads.
- Remove the hard stalks and cut in half . Also, remove any yellow or brownish leaves and any dark spots.
- Cut the heads vertically.
- Transfer the cut sprouts in a mixing bowl.
- Add the sauces, oil and sugar/sweetener and mix well.
- Coat the heads nicely in sauce.
- Preheat the air fryer at 350 °F or 180 °C.
- Arrange the sprouts in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
- Air Fry for 15 mins. at 350 °F or 180 °C.
- Once done, transfer back in the mixing bowl. There should be some sauce remaining.
- Toss the roasted brussels sprouts in the sauce and serve hot.
Storing and Shelf Life
- Tastes best when eaten fresh and hot.
- Stays good for 3-4 days when refrigerated in an air tight container.
