About the Recipe
Labneh mixed with honey with some bits of Mango and pomegranate arils is one addictive dip when served with fruits or crackers.
Sweet Labneh resembles the whipped cream cheese frosting or Shrikhand( indian dessert made with hung curd).
It is a bit tangy with sweet tones from honey and so rich and creamy!! It makes an excellent dip for kids with fruits or veggie sticks. Or, simply use as a spread on toast or crackers. Simply irresistible!!
What is Labneh
Labneh is nothing but strained yogurt which resembles the cream cheese kind of texture and taste. It is more thick and has almost all the water drained unlike Greek Yogurt which has some water drained. It is a staple in Middle Eastern Cuisine and is served in both sweet and savoury forms. Simplest way to serve Labneh is to sprinkle some Zaatar, a splash of Olive oil as a side with crackers or veggie sticks.
Store bought Labneh is very expensive but you can always make it home. It is one of the most simplest but a delicious recipe to try!!
Nutritional benefits of Labneh Cheese
Labneh cheese is high in protein, fat and micronutrients like sodium and calcium.
It is a good source of gut friendly bacteria which in turn strengthens the immunity, skin and hair health weight management and cholesterol management.
Honey is a rich source of antioxidants, has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Soothes sore throat, helps for digestive issues.
Ingredients to make Honey Labneh
Plain Labneh- Homemade or store bought.
Honey- To add sweetness to yogurt cheese and also drizzle on top.
Fruits- Chopped Mango pieces and Pomegranate arils to mix berries and other fruits of your choice to serve with labneh.
Crackers- To serve with Labneh
How to make Honey Labneh
- We need a fine strainer, a cheesecloth or muslin cloth .
- Spoon, full fat yogurt into the cheesecloth. Now place the strainer on bowl, big enough to fit the strainer.
- Also, the level of the strainer should not touch the base of the bowl. There should be enough space for the whey to drip. Plave something heavy like a bowl filled with water. This way complete water will be strained.
- Keep it for about 24 hrs. the longer you keep it to strain, the dense and creamy cheese you will get. This is Labneh.
- You can store it in a container with airtight lid. Or, use it to make Honey Labneh.
- When you are ready to make it transfer to a bowl.
- Add 2 tbsp honey and beat it to a smooth consistency.
- Add chopped mango pieces and pomegranate arils, mix well.
- Spread it into a dish or plate in which you want to serve. Or, simply in a dip bowl.
- Serve with fruits like apples, pear, berries, veggie sticks and crackers.
Serving Suggestions
Top Labneh with toasted nuts like walnuts, pecans or dukkah.
You can include this Honey Labneh in your crudite platter or Mediterranean grazing boards.
Serve it with grilled fruits like peaches, nectarines and pineapple.
Use it as spread on toasts. Kids really love this sweet honey labneh, it is nutritional as it has yogurt and honey both of which are health friendly.
Make mini sandwiches for your high tea and kids lunchboxes or snacking. You can add grated carrots or any finely chopped fruits like apple, pears or pineapple.
Store and Shelf Life
This Yogurt cheese stays good for a week when refrigerated properly in an airtight container.
Try to finish Honey Labneh the same day of you have mixed fruits. Leftovers can be refrigerated, stays good for about 2 days.
FAQ's
When mangoes are not in season you can serve Honey Labneh with roasted grilled fruits like figs peaches and pineapple.
You can also add chopped dried fruits like apricots, dates and cranberry.
Sweet Labneh stays good for 3-4 days in container with airtight lid. It may develop a foul smell, turn light yellow in color or you can see tiny moulds growing on the surface.
