Sweet and Spicy Carrot Hummus Recipe with spicy kick from Siracha Sauce and hint of sweetness from Orange Marmalade!!
Hummus is one of the most popular dip introduced to the world by Mediterranean Cuisine!! Look all around the stores you will find tubs/packs of Hummus in different flavors lined up in the aisles. Take it as a health food or a party dip.. Protein packed Hummus is there for your anytime snack.
What is Hummus
Hummus, Middle Eastern Dip made with boiled and pureed chickpeas, tahini(sesame paste in olive oil), lemon juice and salt. It is served with Mediterranean Mezze Platter , served with Pita Chips as snack. Used as a spread in falafel , vegetable rolls and sandwiches with various fillings. Makes a light lunch but filling lunch when served with various crunchy salad platters with veggies like cucumbers, carrots, radish and bell peppers.
It is one versatile dip. You can make other variations using Spinach, Eggplant, Carrots, Bell Peppers(Roasted Bell Hummus), Beetroots, Asparagus and even fruits like Mango and Strawberry. Add flavor variations with different spice mixes from Zaatar Spic mix to simple Cumin powder or our Indian Chaat Masala(a must try recipe-- Chaat Masala Hummus by Priya Iyer).
I particularly liked this book Israeli Soul by Michal Solomonov and Steven Cook.. which introduced me to Israeli Cuisine and so many variations of Hummus made with white beans, black beans or even with fresh green peas.
Few months back, on one of my visit to one of the grocery stores I sampled two fruity different Hummus with Carrot and Mango that had a mild sweet taste. I loved those lightly spicy and mildly sweet Hummus and thought of giving these a try.
The Theme--#236HummusTime
I was waiting to try out these two Hummus recipes, when Kalyani from our Foodie Bloghop Team, suggested this week's theme. HummusTime, where all the participant bloggers have prepare different variations of Hummus. So here is my Sweet and Spicy Carrot Hummus for this week's theme.
Meanwhile do hop on to Kalyani's blog Sizzling Taste Buds with some awesome gluten-free and vegan dishes. I want to give a try to her recent Karela Podi/Dry chutney Powder recipe among various other South Indian recipes.
I prefer making Hummus at home as the store bought ones has a little much olive oil than we like. Also, my kids(especially my younger one) don't like the raw taste of Garlic so I always add roasted garlic while making Hummus. I think roasted veggies enhance the taste of any Hummus.
This post I am covering Carrot Hummus.. Make Mango Hummus with fresh mango(Check the Mango Hummus Recipe by Mayuri's Jikoni). You can also add canned mango puree to it but that has lot more sweetness added to it.. We want mild sweetness in Hummus that should not conflict with the real taste of Hummus!!
I am little hesitant on trying Strawberry Hummus if you have tried it out do let me know..
Sweet and Spicy Carrot Hummus
Ingredients..
Light Sweet and Spicy Carrot Hummus made with lightly roasted carrots with spicy Siracha and a hint of sweetness from Orange Marmalade.
Chickpeas--You can use Canned Chickpeas or the ones Boiled at home. Whenever I make Chole Masala or Pindi Chole I always soak some extra either to make Hummus, add in salads or make this yummy Pulao with Spinach.. Palak aur Kabuli Chane Ka Pulao or Falafels.
Carrots and Garlic-- You can roast or add raw. I prefer roasted as it enhances the taste or a veggie. If you choose to add raw then it is a no cook recipe. To roast, toss carrots and garlic in olive oil, cumin powder and a pinch of salt.
I roasted Carrots and Garlic in my Air Fryer. This comes handy when I have to make small batch of roasted veggies or bake/air fry something in small amounts or in less oil. Some air fried recipes.. Rajma and Spinach Tikki, Crispy Chinese Vegetables,Crispy Masala Papadi.
You can also roast on griddle or oven if you are making a big batch.
Tahini-- Tahini paste(made from sesame seeds) is a personal choice. Sometimes I add and when I don't have it I add a tbsp of sesame seeds to it. You can skip either of it but add 1-2 tbsp more Olive Oil if skipping Tahini.
Orange Marmalade--In one of the recipes online that I came across few days back , used Apricot Jam for sweetness. As I did not have apricot jam, I decided to try with my Homemade Orange Marmalade with Coconut Sugar. The mild Orange flavor that comes from the orange peels in the marmalade adds to a different fruity and pleasant taste.
For Orange flavor(if not using Marmalade), add finely chopped orange peels or 1 tsp of orange zest and 2-3 tbsp of orange juice. Add 1-2 tbsp honey/maple syrup(vegan friendly) for mild sweetness.
Siracha Sauce--adds to the much needed spicy kick.. If you don't have Siracha add, chilli flakes/Cayenne pepper /smoky paprika and a tsp of Vinegar.
Other Ingredients-- Lemon Juice, Cumin Powder, Salt as per taste.
Freshly ground black pepper and Sunflower/Pumpkin Seeds , Pomegranate pearls for topping..
You can tweak this recipe as per your preferences. Do check out the Notes section in Recipe Card for Substitutes.
