About the post

Think summers and we all want chilled drinks, cool yogurt/dahi recipes and food that soothes our system and of course mango!!

Mango LAssi with Thandai Masala is a cool cool summer drink made with summer favourites Yogurt and Mangoes. Thandai Masala not only enhances the flavour and add a royal a touch to Lassi but also adds to the cooling properties of this summer drink.

What is Lassi

Lassi one of the natural cold drinks from India, cools and protects the body from scorching heat, along with it various health benefits.

You can call Lassi a yogurt smoothie a slight thin consistency, with or without fruits or flavours

It is one of the most loved yogurt based summer drinks in India for the masses, along with buttermilk(chass/matha) which is a more diluted form of yogurt than lassi.

Lassi is consumed in both sweet and savoury forms. Origin of lassi can be traced back to the villages in North India especially Punjab where people consume it with their breakfast or lunch. They have to work in their fields in harsh sun during summers. Drinks like buttermilk and lassi cool down the body also give them energy to work all day in fields. If you visit the North Indian villages in early morning hours, you will see the women churning lassi or buttermilk from fresh homemade yogurt. There are many shops and stalls selling lassi and other drinks like Jal Jeera that help to keep the body cool.

Variations of Lassi

Now a days people make lot of variations with rose syrup and other fruits like this Pineapple and Mint Lassi. But Mango Lassi prepared with King of Fruits still holds the top place in flavoured lassi. Mango Lassi can be flavoured with cardamom or saffron or both. Another spice powder that I like to flavour Lassi with is Thandai Powder.

Thandai which is a popularly prepared during Holi, is another favourite drink that is consumed by many people in hot scorching Indian summers. Thandai made in chilled milk refreshes the body and is also a very nutritious drink

Nutritional Benefits for Mango Lassi with Thandai Masala

Mangoes are rich vitamins C, E, A and minerals. It is rich in carbohydrates and is avoided by people on low sugar diets. But studies have shown now that controlled portion consuming of seasonal fresh fruits is not that harmful for health of those suffering from diabetes.

Yogurt is a rich source of calcium and has lot of good gut bacteria. Good for digestion and promotes weight management.

Thandi powder is loaded with spices like cardamom, fennel, black pepper, poppy seeds that keep the body cool and is good for digestion.

How to make Mango Lassi with Thandai Masala

There are two ways to make Mango Lassi, one with fresh mangoes and the other with canned mango puree.

Mango Lassi with Fresh Mango

Peel and take out the pulp. Discard the seed.

In a blender add mango pieces, sugar and thandai masala. Add about 1/4 cup chilled water and blend to fine puree. You can even add ice cubes while blending mango.

Next add yogurt/dahi and blend again. Take chilled yogurt. Lassi tastes best when served chilled.

Do not add more water if you want thick consistency. Adjust water as per the thickness of lassi.

Serve with 1-2 ice cubes or refrigerate and chill before serving.

Mango Lassi with canned Mango puree

In blender add mango puree, yogurt and chilled water as required (not more than 1/4 cup as per the thickness of lassi required).

Canned puree has sugar content so add sugar accordingly.

Blend for 1 min.

Serve it chilled.

Tips to make perfect glass of Mango Lassi

  • Use fresh and thick yogurt/dahi. It should be chilled.
  • Add chilled water while blending lassi.
  • Add sugar as per your taste.

Additional Notes

  • To make this I have used canned mango puree of Alphonso Mangoes. Outside India, you can get this at Indian grocery stores. To get the authentic taste of Indian Mango desserts like Mango Phirni or kulfi(will soon update), use either Indian mangoes or canned puree.
  • You can make Mango Lassi without thandai powder also but it enhances the taste so I like to add it. You can also add only cardamom powder or skip it altogether.

Do try this Mango Lassi with Thandai spice powder. You can make this spice powder prepared at home or use store-bought. Homemade powder stays good for around 6 months and for longer period in refrigerator.
