About the Recipe

I love Broccoli and Mushroom combination and use these vegetables in my meals like in pulao or in with grilled veggie mix. I love meaty mushrooms with broccoli flavored with garlic and different seasoning or sauces(like Chinese Sauces or in Italian Seasoning). It makes a perfect meal that you can also have just like that without rice/noodles.

It is an Indo-Chinese style dish which is now a well known cuisine all over the world.

Indo Chinese style Broccoli and Mushrooms

Indo Chinese cuisine is the fusion of Indian and Chinese style of cooking, which was made famous by some Chinese migrants settled in Kolkata during the colonial era. They combined their Chinese style of cooking and some ingredients with the ingredients available in India and came up with this delicious Indo Chinese Cuisine. In India in short we call it Chinese Style also.

Ingredients to make Broccoli and Mushroom Stir Fry(Chinese Style)

The recipe is adaptable as you can add or substitute any veggies like bell peppers, beans or proteins like Paneer/Tofu as per your choice.

Broccoli- I prefer using fresh broccoli in the recipe. Choose bright green broccoli without any yellow florets. Check for worms in between the florets.

Mushrooms- I have used button mushrooms in the recipe. I also like using Oyster mushrooms in place of button mushrooms.

Herbs- Fresh Garlic(minced or finely chopped), Incase you run out of garlic then you can use 1 tsp of garlic powder in the recipe.

Sauces- Soy Sauce, Siracha/Garlic Chilli Sauce, Vinegar(use any good plant vinegar). I also like to add a tbsp of tomato ketchup. It is totally optional. You can use Tamari Sauce for Gluten-free version.

Spices- Black pepper, Chilli fakes, Brown sugar, Oil, salt to taste.

Add check carefully as the sauces are already salty.

Others- Sesame Seeds for garnish.

Benefits of Broccoli and Mushroom

Broccoli and mushrooms are very nutritious options for vegetarians and vegans.

Mushrooms are full of antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and proteins. If you are not allergic to mushroom these are the best option for vegans to substitute proteins that come from meat and dairy. Roasting, grilling and stir frying are the best ways to cook mushroom. These are also added to curries like in Kadhai Mushroom

Broccoli is low in calorie, rich source of Vitamin K and C and folate along with potassium. The best way to have broccoli is to stir fry, roast or steam it. Boiling can leach if off from the it's essential nutrients

Serving Suggestions

Kids will love this stir-fry with noodles. I make this quite often as I mentioned above also and pair it with different options. I usually add bell peppers and onions, this time did not have any, so skipped these.

Garlic and Green Onion Noodles, Fried Rice.

Serve it with fried rice, noodles of your choice, add it your buddha bowls or enjoy it just like that on it's own.

You can also serve this stir-fry as a starter at your parties.

Storing the leftovers and reheating

Refrigerate the leftover for a day in air tight container.

Reheat in microwave on HIGH for 1-2 mins. Add tsp water before reheating.

To reheat on stove-pan in a pan, add 1-2 tsp of water and reheat as required.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Broccoli
  • 1 Cup Button Mushrooms
  • 1 tbsp Garlic(finely chopped/minced)

Sauces

  • 2 tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Ketchup optional
  • 1 tbsp Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Chilli Sauce

Spices

  • 1 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tsp Sesame Seeds
  • 1 tsp Chilli Flakes
  • 1 tbsp Brown Sugar/Agave Nectar or any other sweetener
  • 2 tbsp Oil(Sesame preferably)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Wash nicely both broccoli and mushrooms, get rid of all the dirt from mushrooms..
  • Cut broccoli into small florets and cut mushroom into half or as preferred. You can cut the stems if you want.
  • Mix all the sauces together. You can skip tomato ketchup if you don't like in Chinese style food. For me it adds a sweet and tangy taste to the dish.
  • In a wok or in a non-stick pan, add oil and when the oil is hot enough, add garlic saute for a minute, add mushrooms and broccoli and stir-fry on high. Keep stirring the veggies so that it doesn't burn.
  • Stir-fry for 1-2 minutes, keep the texture as you like. Mushrooms should not leave water.
  • Add sauces and mix well. Fry again for a minute and serve as you like it.

Notes

  • Do not over fry the veggies as it will lose the crispiness.
  • Add salt very carefully, as sauces already have lot of salt.
  • You can add veggies of your choice like bell peppers, onions. baby corn or proteins like tofu, paneer or chicken.

Um... the ketchup is a no from me and my hubby. Doing this recipe without the ketchup would have been pretty intuitive so just do that instead. The only Chinese food I know that uses ketchup is Tomato eggs, otherwise I would never see it in a Chinese recipe.

Hello Michelle !! Thanks for giving it a try.. In India we love to add ketchup to many Chinese dishes, there are many Indo-Chinese versions that have ketchup.. It adds a bit of sweet and tangy taste to the dish. I am sorry the ketchup taste didn't go with your taste buds. You can try it without ketchup too. I am adding a note in post also, incase someone doesn't want ketchup in the recipe.

What a wonderful simple and yet healthy stir fry. I usually prefer to have broccoli stir fried as opposed to steamed or boiled. This is definitely a must try recipe.
