What is Mezze Platter

Mezze platters originated in Middle East and now popular throughout the world, especially in Mediterranean region. Mezze means, taste or bite. It's a collection of hot and cold snacks, dips, breads, vegetables (fresh/ grilled or pickled) with fresh fruits.

It is a kind of grazing board whose contents differ by the region and people's preferences.

Such platters are fun to serve when having get together with family and friends. These are all about sharing and enjoying food along with the chat with your loved ones!!

It is Vegetarian and you can make it Vegan Friendly (use plant yogurt like cashew yogurt) and to make Gluten-free add gluten free breads/crackers.

How to arrange Mezze Platter

You can make the contents of platter at home or use store bought. What all needs to included in the platter depends on the size of the crowd and their preferences. When entertaining a large crowd, arrange 2-3 different platter. You may keep the contents same or keep variations depending on what the people like.

A mezze platter can be a mini platter or it can be a large platter with lot of variations. In this post I am sharing a mini Mezze platter that I arranged when my daughter came back for her summers. I welcomed her home with this mini falafel platter or mezze platter.

I will be gradually updating different platters as and when I will serve at my get togethers with friends and family. Everyone at my place loves Mediterranean and many of the Middle Eastern vegetarian dishes (especially the dips and sauces). It makes a light but hearty meal for weekends and an easy to put starter platter when friends come over.

What does a Mezze platter have on it

A Mezze platter consists of various dips like Hummus, Tzatziki, Muhammara, Baba Ganoush, breads mostly toasted pita, various veggies and fruits. Many like to add feta cheese or Hollumin, falafels, kebabs (vegetarian/vegan/non vegetarian) depending on the preferences. I make sure to have various flavours and textures together. Like crispy, creamy, fresh fruits and vegetables, roasted/grilled vegetables, pickled vegetables, sweet and savoury.

I am sharing Mini Mezze platter here with two dips (roasted pepper hummus and tzatziki), falafel, shirazi salad and toasted pita along with fruits and vegetables .

You can add more elements(dips, crackers, fritters/kebabs) as per your and your guests' preferences.

Here is a detailed breakdown of what all elements/ type of items should be included in a simple but exotic looking Mezze platter. There is no specific recipe/ formula of what ratio each item goes in the platter.

Remember there is not right or wrong way or measured proportions to set up this platter. Do what you have and what you like!

Dips/Spreads to be included in Mezze Platter

Hummus- You can buy from store or prepare at home. Hummus (Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, Sweet and Spicy Carrot Hummus, Beetroot Hummus or Coriander and Mint Hummus), Avocado Hummus.

Marinated Olives are one of the main ingredients of Mezze platter. Don't miss these. Black or Green or both you can add any of your choice.

Fresh fruits to cleanse the palate. Add fruits like fresh figs, dates, grapes (green, red) and other seasonal fruits like mango.

Grilled Vegetables/Fruits- Roasted potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, eggplant, zucchini. Grilled pineapple, apricots.

Salads- If you have time you can also include salads like Shirazi/Persian Salad, Greek Salad, Tabbouli, Couscous Salad or this Chickpeas Pasta Salad and many more.

You can make Hummus, Tzatziki and other dips like Muhammara a day ahead. Or, you can use store bought also. Keep it refrigerated in an airtight container. Before serving take out of refrigerator a few mins or an hour earlier so that it comes at room temperature.
Falafels can be made the same day or a day ahead. I prefer making it the same day. Store in a container with airtight lid. Reheat in oven or air fryer before serving.
