Carrot Sama Rice Kheer

Sama Rice or Barnyard Millet, a gluten free grain, that is consumed in India during fasting days as a substitute for Rice. The grain is smaller in size, but the cooked grain tastes like rice. Sama Rice Pulao, Sama Rice Kheer are common dishes made with it. Nowadays people make cutlets and other delectable dishes using this grain along with the flours and other ingredients used  during fasting days. Check out Vrat Ki Papadi Chaat from the blog.

Chaitra Navratri(that falls in the month of March or April) begins today. It is a nine day long fasting period for Hindus in India, where they fast and worship nine forms Goddess Durga. Many people fast for 2 days and many for full 8 or 9 days. It is already too hot in many parts of North India where these fasts are observed. So if while  fasting you want something thanda thanda cool cool, the make this kheer, chill in refrigerator and eat whenever you want something cool and light. Check out other fasting  kheer recipes from the blog..Makhane Ki Kheer and Paneer ki Kheer .

I have added finely grated carrots, almonds and raisins to make it more nutritious. Kids also like this kheer as it tastes just like their favourite Chawal ki Kheer(Rice Pudding).

  1. Swati I often make sama kheer especially during Ekadashi fasting. However never tried with carrot added to it. Good idea. Will try it next time to make it even more wholesome and healthy.

  2. This is a yummy combination of Sama rice and carrots. Kheer is my all time favourite. I am drooling and want to pick up one bowl from my screen.
