About the Recipe

Aloo is Potato and Shakarkandi is Sweet Potato.

Aloo Shakarkandi ki Chaat is boiled/roasted potato and sweet potato tossed in Indian spice mix Chaat Masala and chutneys garnished with fresh coriander leaves and pomegranate seeds. It is basically a salad but in North India it called Chaat as it is sold by roadside vendors.

It is a satvik recipe that can be eaten on fasting days and festivals. People also make it during regular days as evening snack specially in winters.

If you have visited North India during winters, you will many street vendors serving roasted (Aloo Aur) Shakarkandi ki chaat. They roast vegetables on small chullahs or angeetis, small traditional clay stoves in India that are filled with coal or wood. This gives an earthy aroma to roasted potatoes and sweet potatoes. Topped with dash of lemon, red chilli powder and salt makes it very appetizing and appealing to taste buds.

Many people like to skip potatoes and make the chaat only with sweet potatoes. I like to add both the root vegetables. You may skip potatoes if you want. And only Shakarkandi Ki Chaat.

What is Chaat

Chaat in India , refers to practically any snack that has all the elements (sweet, spicy, tangy, sour) to tickle off your taste buds. It is usually eaten as evening snack but you can relish it at any time of day. Chaat items consists from deep fried Pakoras(Dal ke Pakora), Onion Bhajiya(chickpea and onion fritters), the famous Bhel Puri, Aloo Tikkis(potato cutlets) , Dahi Papadi, Dahi Vade . Golpappe/Pani Poori(deep fried whole wheat puffed breads with sweet and tangy water and many more.

People usually enjoy chaat items, prepared by street-food vendors, but you can make these at home too.

Benefits of Sweet Potatoes and Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are known to be more nutritious than potatoes. Sweet potatoes are rich in fibers, vitamins and minerals and a great source of beta-carotene. Many studies have shown that these also regulate the blood sugar levels.

Potatoes are good source of fibers, Vit. C, minerals like potassium, zinc and calcium for stronger bones.

Both sweet potato and potatoes are known to be Poor Man's food due to the easily availability cheap prices as compared to other vegetables and their nutritional value.

Aloo Aur Shakarkandi Ki Chaat(Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes Chaat)

It is a very easy and quick recipe if you have the chutneys in hand. We need Dhaniya Chutney/Green Chutney or the Coriander and Mint Chutney and sweet and tangy Tamarind Chutney.

When making for non-fasting days one can add finely chopped onions, with sev(fried chickpea very fine noodles) on it. On fasting days one can add pomegranate seeds or cucumber or aloo laccha (fried potato noodles used for Indian namkeen/ savory snack).

Ingredients to make Aloo Shakarkandi Chaat

Sweet Potatoes. Potatoes, Chaat Masala(homemade or store bought) , kala namak(black salt)are the main ingredients.

Optional ingredients are pomegranate seeds, fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped onions, plain yogurt, green coriander and mint chutney and tamarind chutney.

You may also add only lemon juice and skip chutneys if you want to keep it simple.

You can also garnish chaat with any of the toppings like papdi, sev.

Method

Boil Potatoes and Sweet potatoes and then toss in chaat masala and top with Cilantro-Mint and Tamarind Chutneys. Many people also like to stir fry potatoes and sweet potatoes in little oil/ghee.

You can pressure cook or boil /steam in open pan also, but it takes more time. I took medium sized sweet potatoes, one whistle in pressure cooker is enough. Do the Quick Pressure Release. Sweet potatoes take less time to cook, one whistle is enough.

Boiled potatoes and sweet potatoes should have a bite and not very soft and mushy.

You can skip boiling the tubers. Wash nicely, peel and cube. Then heat some oil/ghee in a pan/kadhai and then roast the cubes till soft. This will take some time.

Saute peeled, cubed sweet potato and potato in 1 tsp desi ghee/oil for a minute. You can skip this part and make the chaat/salad without any oil/ghee.

When potatoes and sweet potatoes start to get caramelize add salt and mix well.

Take out in a serving bowl.

Divide into individual bowls, top with green chutney and tamarind chutney. add pomegranate seeds or onion (during non-fasting days).

For Vegan or No-Oil version or , you can skip frying it in ghee and directly add chaat masala and chutneys.

Boil Potato and Sweet Potato
Peel the boiled tubers
Cube in small bite sized pieces
SAute in 1 tsp ghee/oil
Add salt as per taste
Sprinkle some chaat masala or roasted cumin powder and amchur/dry mango powder
Add green chutney and tamarian chutney
Mix nicely and serve

Few tips to note while making it for fasting days

  • If you don't use all the ingredients for Chaat masala or avoid the ready-made one during fasting, you can use only roasted cumin powder, dry mango powder(amchur) and sendha namak(salt used for fasting) for taste.
  • All the above spices are available at Indian grocery stores.
  • Substitute for Sendha Namak is Pink Himalayan Salt.

Fire roasted Shakarkandi ki chaat is a popular Street food in North India. At home boiling is the easiest way. I like that you have mixed both the varieties of potatoes in this chaat. Looks lip smacking !
